Rockaways Farmshed
A tool shed and wash station designed enhance farm operations, respond to a beautiful but flood-prone site, and minimize resource consumption.
Sited on a farm in the Rockaways operated by The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH), a local nonprofit dedicated to providing access to healthy food for all New Yorkers, the shed was designed on a pro bono basis and a tight budget.
The shed and wash area are without electricity so the building has a northerly orientation which allows for adequate interior daylighting while limiting solar heat gain. The wash area was carefully researched and designed in collaboration with TCAH staff to maximize the efficiency of produce washing and packaging, while reducing water consumption and collecting/filtering used wash water for reuse.
